An economics major, Tom Poole earned four varsity letters in soccer and two in lacrosse. As a senior, Poole captained the 1960 Hobart soccer team that ended the season with a 6-1-1 record, the best in Hobart soccer history prior to the 1992 squad going 15-0-1. Upon graduation, Tom entered Navy Officer Candidate’s School. His tour of duty included service as a supply officer on the destroyer USS Cony during the Cuban missile crisis.
For over twenty years, Poole has given generously of his time, leadership, business acumen, and resources in support of the Colleges, Hobart Athletics, and the Statesmen Athletic Association. Under Poole’s leadership as a Director and as President, the SAA experienced tremendous growth in memberships and donations. Tom played a key role in the development of funding for the Robert A. Bristol Field House, the AstroTurf Stadium, the Napier Leadership Seminar, the John Topichak Memorial Team Room, and the Bob Ford Basketball Team Room. Tom has served on the Colleges’ Board of Trustees since 1991, and in 1995, he received the William Napier Memorial Award for his outstanding service to Hobart Athletics and to the SAA.
Since 1977, Tom has been President and CEO of Hallen Construction Company. In 1992, he was elected to the Pipeliners Hall of Fame and in 1997 he received the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Business Leadership in Nassau County. His civic commitment is extensive and among his numerous citations is the American Heart Association’s Distinguished Leadership Award.
