Box Score Fourth-ranked Hobart College and Union played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in the semifinal round of the Liberty League Men's Soccer Tournament this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Dutchmen advanced to the championship game after prevailing 5-4 on penalty kicks. The Statesmen moved to 16-0-3 overall, while Union now stands at 11-3-4.
Hobart outshot its visitor 4-3 in the scoreless first half. The Statesmen had multiple opportunities to score, the best coming in the 32nd minute. Senior midfielder
Tyler Webster (Acton Boxborough/Acton, Mass.) found first-year midfielder
Chris King (Hauppauge/Hauppauge, N.Y.) in front of Union's goal. King's point-blank shot was stopped short by a diving save from Dutchman goalie Rob Kramer (Staples/Westport, Conn.).
The second stanza was a different story, as both teams got on the board. Union tallied in the 60th minute, when Marc Zeyak (LaSalle Institute/Valatie, N.Y.) sent a low cross to Ryan Banagan (Bethlehem Central/Albany, N.Y.) for the shot from less than 1 yard in front of the goal.
Less than five minutes later, the Statesmen answered to even the game again at 1-all. Senior forward
Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) dodged a few Union defenders on the right side of the net, then sent a low cross into the box that found Webster for the direct shot from 1 yard out.
Despite multiple tries by both teams, there was not another shot on goal for the remainder of regulation.
In the first overtime period, Webster drew a red card and was ejected, causing Hobart to play a man-down for the remainder of the match. Even though they had one less man, the Statesmen still had two chances to end the game. Senior midfielder
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) was at the center of both opportunities. In the 97th minute, he headed the ball toward the goal, but Kramer was there for the save. Then, in the 100th minute, Schoeniger sent a low ball up the middle to Riso for a one-on-one chance, but Kramer came out to quell the threat just before Riso could get the shot off.
The second overtime was more of the same; both teams came close, but neither could capitalize.
The Dutchmen advanced to the championship game after prevailing in a shootout, 5-4. Kramer came up with a big save on Hobart's second shot, and the Statesmen couldn't recover.
Hobart senior goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) picked up one save, while Kramer finished with six. The Statesmen held a 17-7 advantage in shots, and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
