Hobart College senior Matt Geswell was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Men’s Soccer Academic All-District Second Team. A biology major, Geswell has earned numerous academic accolades; he’s a five-time Dean’s List honoree, a three-time Liberty League All-Academic pick, a two-time Hobart Scholar, 2009 Hale Scholar, and 2006 Trustee Scholar.

A defender, Geswell has anchored a unit that allowed just five goals against non-conference opponents and has posted eight shutouts so far this season. Over the past four years, he has been a mainstay on the Hobart defense, playing in 71 of a possible 76 matches, and starting 68. Geswell has guided the Statesmen to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a 53-12-11 record to date. For his career, he’s amassed one goal and seven assists.

To earn a place on the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve, and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) select eight Academic All-District teams and choose the Academic All-America teams from the eight District first-teams.

CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large, and women’s at-large. A first-team, second-team, and third-team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.

The Hobart soccer team (11-3-2, 4-2-0 Liberty League) will wrap its regular season schedule on Oct. 31, when it hosts Liberty League foe Hamilton (9-3-1, 5-1-0 LL) at 11:30 a.m. The Continentals currently occupy the top spot in the conference standings, while the Statesmen are third. Hobart has secured a spot in the four-team Liberty League tournament, but the Statesmen will have to wait for the results of Saturday’s league matches to find out where they’ll be seeded.

Fans unable to make it to Cozzens Field can listen to the game live on WHWS-FM (105.7), or follow along online with Live Stats, available at www.HWSAthletics.com.

Abbie DiPalma
William Smith Rowing
DiPalma served as the coxswain for the William Smith varsity eight that finished second in the petite final at the ECAC Championships on Sunday. In their morning heat, the Herons committed a false start, but then turned in the third fastest time of the heats (out of 20 crews in three heats). William Smith covered the course in 6:59.640, then logged a time of 6:57.688 in the petite final, second only to Division I New Hampshire.
Kevin Curtin
Hobart Lacrosse
Facing the toughest defense in the nation, Curtin posted his third consecutive hat trick. He completed his collegiate career with a three-goal performance at Bryant on Thursday. The Bulldogs came into the contest allowing just 6.44 goals per game, but the Statesmen netted nine goals, the second highest total against Bryant this season. Curtin capped his career 11th in career goals and career points and 12th in career assists.
