GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team defeated Liberty League foe Hamilton 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field, in the final regular season conference game for both teams. The Statesmen improve to 12-3-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Continentals fall to 9-4-1 on the year and 5-2-0 in the league.

The win guarantees Hobart either the first or second seed in the Liberty League Tournament, which begins next week. The Statesmen will await the final score of the Rensselaer/Vassar match today; if RPI wins, Hobart will be the second seed. If the Brewers prevail, or the teams tie, the Statesmen will be the top seed. Either way, Hobart will host a first round match on Tues., Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m.

Hobart put the first point on the board 27 minutes, 46 seconds into the match. After a corner kick from sophomore Michael Moulton, sophomore Evan Grey found himself open for a shot from 7 yards out following a scramble in front of the net. The goal marked Grey’s third of the season.

The Continentals evened the game at 1-all in the 47th minute. Sam Dwyer sent a lead pass to Jon Sanford for a header that beat sophomore Statesmen goalie Charlie Hale to the lower left corner of the net.

Hobart sophomore Tommy Hayes took charge late in the second half to set up the go-ahead goal. Hayes broke away from the Hamilton defense in the 83rd minute, beating one defender and drawing goalkeeper Eric Boole out of his net. Hayes crossed the ball to a wide open Moulton for the shot from about 3 yards out.

Hale finished with five saves for the Statesmen, while Boole collected three stops for the Continentals.

Hobart held a slight 13-12 edge in shots, but enjoyed a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
