SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The Hobart College soccer team fell to Swarthmore in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament 2-1 in double-overtime tonight on Clothier Field. The Statesmen close their season with a 15-4-2 overall record, while the Garnet advance to the third round holding a 16-2-2 mark.

Sophomore Chris King tallied his third goal of the year to put Hobart up 1-0 in the 19th minute. He ripped a shot that deflected off a Swarthmore defender and past Garnet goalie Zachary Weimar.

With 13 minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the first half, senior defender Matt Geswell drew a red card and was ejected from the contest, forcing the Statesmen to play a man-down for the remainder of the match.

In the 53rd minute, Hobart sophomore Tommy Hayes and Swarthmore’s Dylan Langley each picked up their second yellow card of the game, and both were ejected. The rest of the match was played 10-on-9, with the Garnet still holding the man-up edge.

Swarthmore was finally able to capitalize on its advantage in the 86th minute, as John Pontillo set up Morgan Langley for the equalizer. Langley’s shot from 16 yards out curved into the back of the net and sent the game into overtime.

In the 107th minute, Philippe Celestin netted his first goal of the year to give the Garnet the victory. Celestin put the pressure on in the second overtime period, taking three shots. His third shot found its target, after he dribbled in toward the goal and fired from the top of the box.

Swarthmore outshot Hobart 30-12, and held a lopsided 17-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Statesmen sophomore goalie Charlie Hale matched his career high with nine saves, while Weimar finished with two stops for the Garnet.

Swarthmore will take on Transylvania in the third round of the NCAA Tournament next weekend.
