GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team and 15th-ranked Ithaca College played to a scoreless double-overtime draw in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Bombers advanced to the NCAA sectional round, edging the Herons in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4.

William Smith wraps its season with a 14-3-3 overall record, while Ithaca moves to 15-4-2 on the season.

After playing a scoreless 110 minutes, the match went into a shootout. The Bombers netted all five of their penalty kicks, thanks to well-placed shots from Amy Scheffer (Schenectady, N.Y.), Lauren Koppel (Rockville Center, N.Y.), Caroline Jastremski (Staten Island, N.Y.), Emily Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.), and Kelly Gannon (Howe Caverns, N.Y.). The Herons put away four of their five kicks, but it was not enough. Neither goalie registered a save in the shootout.

Ithaca held a 12-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first 110 minutes of action. Senior Katelyn Tyson took three shots for the Herons today, including one on net in the 77th minute that Platt stopped.

William Smith had a good look at the goal with under two minutes to play in the second overtime. Sophomore Kate Redmond beat a defender, carried the ball up the right sideline, and sent a well-placed cross into the box to junior BreLynn Nasypany. Nasypany jumped to head it into the goal, but Ithaca goalie Jessica Platt (New Marlborough, Mass.) barely beat her to the ball and punched it out.

Ithaca’s best chance to score came in the second overtime period. Heron sophomore goalie Amanda Davis came out of her net to smother a shot by Rachel Palladino (Lansing, N.Y.) in the 101st minute, but didn’t control the ball. Palladino recovered and passed back to Scheffer for an open shot on goal, but Scheffer’s attempt soared over the crossbar.

The Bomber’s also had a good chance to tally in the first half, in the 38th minute. Scheffer lofted a free kick into the box, where Julie Winn (Sutton, Mass.) settled the ball and took a shot that hit the crossbar. The ball bounced down, but Davis was able to collect it before Ithaca could capitalize.

Davis finished with two saves for her 14th shutout of the season, while Platt also collected two stops.

Ithaca will move on to play in the NCAA Tournament Third Round. The Bombers will face the winner of the Rochester/Rowan match, which is set to kickoff at 6 p.m. tonight.
