Hobart Lacrosse Head Coach T.W. Johnson recently announced that senior attackman Kevin Curtin will serve as the team captain for the 2010 season. It’s the first time since 1995 that the Statesmen will look to just one student-athlete as team captain.

“Kevin’s body of work as a student-athlete at Hobart is more than impressive and I’m confident his leadership will allow our program to continue to move in a positive direction,” Johnson said. “More importantly, Kevin’s teammates view him as hardworking, responsible, and someone who always puts the team in front of himself. I’m proud of our team for this selection.”

Curtin was second on the team in points in 2009, netting 21 goals and setting up 13 more. He counted a team-high three-game winners among his 21 tallies. Curtin was second in the ECAC Lacrosse league in game-winning goals and eighth in assists per game (0.93) and points per game (2.43).

Last season marked Curtin’s first as a fulltime starter and he responded by more than tripling his 2008 points total (10-1-11). In 34 career games over the past three seasons, Curtin has produced 33 goals and 15 assists.

Off the field, Curtin is an exceptional student. He has earned ECAC All-Academic honors in each of the past two seasons. The economics major is a Druid, Hobart’s senior class honor society, a Trustee Scholar, and a member of Chimera, Hobart’s junior class honor society.

It’s a rare occurrence for the Statesmen to look to just one student-athlete for leadership. Jim Martin ’95 was the last Statesman to serve as the lone team captain leading Hobart to a 7-6 record in 1995, the program’s first in Division I. It never happened during Hobart’s 15-season run in Division III and happened only once from 1970 to 1979 (Phil Smith ’70 in 1970).

Hobart returns 27 members of last season’s squad, including six starters. The Statesmen posted a 7-7 overall record in 2009.

Facing the toughest defense in the nation, Curtin posted his third consecutive hat trick. He completed his collegiate career with a three-goal performance at Bryant on Thursday. The Bulldogs came into the contest allowing just 6.44 goals per game, but the Statesmen netted nine goals, the second highest total against Bryant this season. Curtin capped his career 11th in career goals and career points and 12th in career assists.

DiPalma served as the coxswain for the William Smith varsity eight that finished second in the petite final at the ECAC Championships on Sunday. In their morning heat, the Herons committed a false start, but then turned in the third fastest time of the heats (out of 20 crews in three heats). William Smith covered the course in 6:59.640, then logged a time of 6:57.688 in the petite final, second only to Division I New Hampshire.
