GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team captured its first Liberty League Championship today, as the Statesmen defeated Union 2-1 in double-overtime on Cozzens Field. Hobart improves to 14-3-2 on the season, and earns a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Dutchmen drop to 11-5-2 overall.

Junior Kevin McCarthy was named the Liberty League Tournament MVP after netting the game-winning goal in the 106th minute of action. Sophomore Tony Yeboah sent a lead pass to McCarthy, who touched it into the bottom left corner of the net from about 17 yards out. The goal was McCarthy’s fourth of the season.

McCarthy also recorded an assist on the first Hobart score, which came late in the second half. He crossed the ball to sophomore Michael Moulton in the 84th minute to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Moulton’s fifth of the year.

Union evened the game at 1-all and forced overtime in the 87th minute. Jack Scott ripped a shot through traffic that Statesmen sophomore goalie Charlie Hale initially caught, but the momentum from the shot pushed him backward over the goal line.

Dutchman Sebastiaan Jensen, the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Year, had a chance to give Union the win on a point-blank shot in the 88th minute, but he missed wide.

Both teams registered 14 shots, while Hobart held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Union held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-5.

Hale finished with four saves, while Adam Margulies collected six stops for the Dutchmen.

The 2009 NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced on Mon., Nov. 9, around 10 a.m.
