In 22 seasons with the Herons, she has never had a losing season, compiling an exceptional 347-104-3 record (.768). Hired by William Smith in 1988, Scatton’s first squad posted a 15-5 record and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. In fact, the Herons made the NCAA Tournament in each of her first 11 seasons on campus and 17 out of a possible 22 times overall.
In 1992, Scatton guided William Smith to a 22-1 record and the program’s first NCAA Division III National Championship. She was named the NFHCA Division III Regional and National Coach of the Year for her efforts.
Scatton’s teams returned to the pinnacle of the sport, winning national championships in 1997 and 2000 and earning her NFHCA Division III Regional and National Coach of the Year awards each time. She was also named the Regional Coach of the Year in 2004 when she led the Herons to the NCAA semifinals.
Since the Liberty League was founded in 1995, William Smith has finished atop the conference standings 10 times. In 2002, the League instituted a postseason tournament which the Herons won four times between 2004 and 2007. The conference dominance of Scatton’s squads has been recognized by her peers with seven Liberty League Coach of the Year awards.
An outstanding mentor, Scatton has guided the development of 47 NFHCA All-Americans, 10 Liberty League Players of the Year, and six Heron Hall of Honor inductees. Many of her protégées have gone on to coach field hockey at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels, including Tina Warner Solomon ’95 (Fayetteville-Manlius HS), Nicky Livingston Huston ’02 (Harpursville HS) and current William Smith assistant coaches
Sophie Dennis ’07 and
Skylar Beaver ’08.
An accomplished coach of not only field hockey, but lacrosse, basketball, and swimming as well, Scatton has guided teams at Cornell University, Wells College, and Gorham (Maine) High School.
A graduate of Ithaca College, she played four years of field hockey and lacrosse and three years of basketball, earning the school’s Senior Woman Athlete of the Year award. In 1997, Scatton was inducted into the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame and, in 2007, the William Smith Heron Hall of Honor. She earned a master’s degree in education from Cortland.
Scatton also serves as an assistant director of athletics at William Smith. She oversees the department's scheduling, coordinates the annual William Smith Athletics Banquet, and is the co-director of the Great Heron Road Race, a charity event that has raised over $30,000 for local breast cancer organizations. Scatton is also a dedicated volunteer with the Geneva Community Lunch Program.
Scatton is the second William Smith head coach to be selected to a national hall of fame this year and third overall. In November,
US Lacrosse enshrined Head Coach Pat Genovese in its Hall of Fame, while Cross Country Head Coach Jack Warner was inducted into the
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
