ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team finished sixth in the Liberty League Championships hosted by the University of Rochester. It's the Herons best finish since placing sixth in the 2004 conference meet.

Rochester won the team title with 1,017 points. Rensselaer was second with 634, followed by Union (563), Vassar (408), St. Lawrence (358), William Smith (245), Skidmore (209), and Clarkson (103).

In the today's first session, the 200-yard medley relay of Lauren Morosky, Katie Stebbins, Alisha Rexford, and Casey Sherwin finished sixth in 2 minutes, 1.63 seconds. William Smith's B relay placed 11th in 2:02.02.

The Herons had three swimmers score in the 100 backstroke. Sherwin led the way with a 7th place showing in 1:04.88. She was followed by Jessica Cook in ninth (1:05.35) and Ariana Vasquez in 14th (1:06.9).

Sherwin's team-best individual finish was matched by Caitlin O'Brien in the 1,650 freestyle. She earned seventh place in that event in 19:22.75. Charlotte Scott was 10th in 19:32.95.

Scott also had a top-10 finish in the 400 individual medley, finishing ninth in 5:07.98.

William Smith's scoring in the early session was completed by Heidi Gordon and Stebbins in the 100 breaststroke. Gordon took 11th in 1:15.73, while Stebbins was 13th in 1:16.23.

The Herons posted their best finish of the meet in the final event. The 400 free relay of Sherwin, Stebbins, Scott, and Morosky was fifth in 3:54.40. The William Smith B relay was 12th.

Cook notched William Smith's top individual finish in the evening, taking ninth in the 200 backstroke in 2:20.74. Sherwin was two spots back in the event in 2:22.22.

The Herons had three swimmers score in both the 200 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly. Gordon (10th, 2:42.37), Stebbins (12th, 2:45.58), and Lauren Jack (16th, 2:49.17) earned points in the former, while Scott (11th, 2:32.88), Cook (14th, 2:35.01), and Mamme Daley (2:35.21) scored in the latter.

The conference championship meet marks the end of the 2009 portion of William Smith's schedule. The Herons next meet is the Rensselaer Invitational on Jan. 23, 2010.

Hobart Soccer
Hayes scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Statesmen to a 2-1 win at two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Messiah College on Friday. He also scored the game-winner in a 6-1 triumph at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Hayes is tied for the team lead in goals.

Atwan opened the season with a total of 11 points in two William Smith victories. She netted a pair of goals and assisted on a third, all in the first half, as the Herons defeated Oswego 7-0 on Wednesday. Three days later, Atwan produced her first career hat trick, all in the second half, to rally William Smith from a two-goal halftime deficit to a 4-2 victory. Her 11 points is nearly double her point total from her first two seasons combined and nearly halfway to her point total last year (25).
