After leading the 18th-ranked Herons to a 3-0 record last week, two members of the William Smith College lacrosse team were honored by the Liberty League office this afternoon. Junior Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) was named the league's Co-Offensive Performer of the Week, while first-year Lucy Johnson (Millburn/Short Hills, N.J.) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week. This is the second week in a row Fitzgerald has received the honor.
Fitzgerald netted 14 goals in three games. She scored three goals, including the game-winner, in a 9-7 victory over St. John Fisher on Tuesday, and notched six goals in a 17-10 win vs. Rensselaer on Friday. On Saturday, Fitzgerald found the back of the net five times in the Herons' 19-10 victory over Vassar. She has recorded a team-high 24 goals and 27 points so far this spring, and currently leads the Liberty League in goals per game (4.80) and points per game (5.40).
Johnson was the second-leading scorer for William Smith last week, tallying seven goals and three assists. She netted two goals against the Cardinals, and scored three goals, including the game-winner, vs. the Red Hawks. Johnson went on to register two goals and two assists in the Herons' win over the Brewers. She also added a helper in the game vs. Rensselaer. Johnson shares the team lead with five assists, and ranks second in scoring with 11 goals and 16 points.
William Smith owns an undefeated 5-0 overall mark, and a 2-0 record in the Liberty League. The Herons will be back in action on April 1, when they travel to 12th-ranked Cortland for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
