3 Herons named CRCA Scholar-Athletes

Three members of the William Smith College rowing team were recently named Scholar-Athletes by the College Rowing Coaches Association. Coxswains Kenzie Cannon '09 and Abbie DiPalma '10 and oarswoman Kirsten Cooper '10 were recognized for their excellence in the classroom and on the water.

A public policy studies major, Cannon is a two-time CRCA second team All-American. As the coxswain for the Heron varsity eight, she helped William Smith win 16 Liberty League Boat of the Week awards during her career. Cannon was also a member of two Liberty League Crews of the Year, while twice earning a spot on the conference's all-academic team. She completed her career as a Heron by earning the S. Ford Weiskittel Most Valuable Oarswoman Award and the Evaleen C. Harrison '19 Scholar-Athlete Award at the annual William Smith Awards Banquet.

Cooper and DiPalma were both members of the Heron second varsity eight this season, winning a silver medal at the New York State Rowing Championships. Both women are two-time Liberty League All-Academic selections and were also named CRCA Scholar-Athletes following the 2007-08 season. They shared the William Smith Rowing Coach's Award at the 2006-07 William Smith Awards Banquet.

Cooper is an Asian languages and cultures major, while DiPalma is studying mathematics.

Over the past seven seasons, the Herons have earned 14 CRCA Scholar-Athlete awards. To be named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5, must have completed one academic year, and must compete in a varsity boat in at least 75 percent of the spring's races.
