Gilbert '06 returns to coach Statesmen
Hobart Rowing
Hobart College Rowing Head Coach Mike Alton announced the appointment of Dan Gilbert ’06 to serve as the Statesmen’s assistant coach in 2009-10. Gilbert will also be the rigger for both Hobart and William Smith rowing.

“I’m excited to hire Dan Gilbert as the next assistant coach for Hobart Rowing,” Alton said. “Dan brings a great deal of experience to this position from his time as a student-athlete to his most recent time at the Princeton Training Center and will lead our novices, while assisting with the varsity.”

Gilbert returns to his alma mater after serving as a volunteer assistant to the freshmen coach at Georgetown University this past spring. He worked closely with the Hoyas' top two freshmen heavy weight eights.

As a Statesman, Gilbert was a four-year member of the varsity. Hobart enjoyed a great deal of success during his quadrennial, including gold medal-winning efforts at the 2002 Head of the Charles (V8+), 2003 New York State Championships (V4+), 2003 IRA Championships (N4+), and the 2004 and 2006 Liberty League Championships (V8+). Gilbert was a member of seven Liberty League Boats of the Week and three consecutive Liberty League Crews of the Year.

Following his graduation, Gilbert spent three years training for international competition with the USRowing Casperson Training Center in Princeton, N.J., and with the Penn AC Rowing Club in Philadelphia. Gilbert competed with the national team for the selection of the 4+, 2+ and lightweight 8+ events, and competed in the 2007 Head of the Charles regatta in the men’s championship 8+ with the team. When not serving in his capacity as a coxswain, he worked as an assistant to U.S. National Team Coach Ted Nash.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Gilbert graduated from Brighton High School and began his rowing career with the Brighton Rowing Club.

Hobart is the four-time defending Liberty League champion. In the fall, the Statesmen will welcome back 31 members of last year’s team, including seven members of the varsity eight. Hobart’s 2009-10 schedule is set to begin on Oct. 3 with the annual HWS Challenge on the Canal.
