Little, #18 Herons blank Lyons 2-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—First-year goalie Taryn Little posted her first collegiate shutout to lead the 18th-ranked William Smith field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) on McCooey Field this afternoon. Making just her second start, Little turned back all eight shots she faced.

The Lyons (3-3) came out firing in the first 10 minutes, controlling the tempo of the match, but could not solve Little. The Herons (6-0) gained the momentum in the 17th minute, when first-year Alyssa David made a long diagonal pass to junior Tempe Newson. From the left side of the cage, Newson fired home her fifth goal of the season for a 1-0 William Smith lead.

The Herons had a 7-4 advantage in shots at halftime, but only Newson's goal to show for it.

William Smith got off to a better start in the second half. First-year Annie Kietzman's lead pass sprung junior Emily Atwan on a breakaway. Atwan made a deft move to her left to avoid the Wheaton keeper and notch her fifth goal of the season just three minutes into the second session.

The Herons stretched their shooting edge to 17-9 by the time the final horn sounded.

Senior goalie Andrea Bagley recorded 13 saves for Lyons.

William Smith begins conference play on Sept. 25, with a trip to Hamilton. The match is schedule to begin at 4 p.m.
