The William Smith College lacrosse team is one of 62 Division III teams to be named a 2009 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Squad. Additionally, two recent graduates,
Torie Allen '09 and
Karin LeBlanc '09 were tabbed IWLCA Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 academic year. In all, 407 student-athletes at 152 institutions were recognized.
In order to receive IWLCA Academic Squad accolades, a team must have a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher. To earn scholar-athlete honors, a student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and be at least a junior academically.
A defender, Allen led the Herons in 2009 with 56 ground balls, 51 draw controls, and 30 caused turnovers. She was second in the Liberty League in all three categories and ranked 27th in the nation in caused turnovers. A two-time first team All-Liberty League selection, Allen played in 64 career games. She finished her career with four goals, three assists, 166 ground balls, 124 draw controls, and 84 caused turnovers. Allen is William Smith's career record holder for draws and ranks second all-time in caused turnovers. She majored in biology while at William Smith, and is currently studying nursing at Northeastern University.
A history major, LeBlanc posted 32 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers, and five draws in her final season, earning All-Liberty League second team honors for her efforts. Along with Allen, she was a leader for the Heron defense that allowed 9.13 goals per game (20th in the nation) and led the conference in caused turnovers. A three-year starter, LeBlanc played in 61 career games, notching two goals, two assists, 108 ground balls, 39 caused turnovers, and 10 draws.
William Smith posted an overall record of 11-4 this past spring, including a 6-2 Liberty League mark. The Herons were ranked as high as 13th in Division III.
