#4 Herons suffer double-overtime loss to #10 Lynchburg

Box Score BALTIMORE—The fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss to 10th-ranked Lynchburg today in its first game of the Johns Hopkins Tournament. The Herons slip to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Hornets improve to 2-0-0 overall.

Lynchburg struck first, as Beverly Hoath headed in a cross from Ashley Hoath just over 30 minutes into the game. William Smith responded a short time later. In the 42nd minute, junior forward BreLynn Nasypany tallied her second goal of the season to even the match at 1-all. Sophomore midfielder Mary Jameson set up the play.

After a hard-fought second half, the teams were deadlocked at 1-1. The game remained tied until the 108th minute, when Hornet Betsy Kwiatkowski drew William Smith sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Davis out of the net and chipped in the game-winning goal.

The Herons had a good chance to take a 2-1 lead in the second half. In the 59th minute, first-year midfielder Whitney Frary guided a corner kick to Nasypany, but Nasypany's shot just missed, bouncing off the crossbar.

In the evenly-matched contest, William Smith held a slight 10-9 advantage in shots, while both teams each had four corner kick opportunities.

Davis finished with three saves, and Lynchburg goalie Anna Wright collected five.

The Herons will be back in action at the John Hopkins Tournament tomorrow, Sept. 6, when they square off against another nationally-ranked opponent, No. 8 Washington (Mo.), at 1 p.m.
