First-years lead Statesmen past Union 64-50

First-years Rezin Davis, Sean Peer, and Stefan Thompson hit double figures in the scoring column to lead Hobart to a 64-50 Liberty League men's basketball victory at Union this afternoon. Davis produced a game-high 15 points, while Peer and Thompson each chipped in 12.

Peer also collected a game-high seven rebounds, helping the Statesmen to a 38-31 advantage on the glass. Additionally, Tim Llewellyn notched game-highs with five assists and four steals.

Union (5-8, 1-2) was led by Rusmir Dzanko, who scored 13 points, and Matt Covucci had eight points. Four Union players had four rebounds each.

Hobart (8-6, 1-2) shot just 38 percent for the game, while the Dutchmen shot 41 percent, but the Statesmen made 10 of their 12 free throws (83%) compared to only 8-of-14 for Union.

Hobart jumped out to a 20-11 lead 9:10 into the contest, and scored the final seven points of the first half to carry a 39-19 lead into the break. Hobart forced 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, and outscored the Dutchmen 13-2 off turnovers.

With 16:44 left in the second half, Union got within 17, 43-26, after a three point play by Dzanko. But the Statesmen, who led by as many as 24 in the second half, got back-to-back three-pointers from Davis for a 49-26 lead with 14:28 left, putting the game out of reach.

Union's Alex Haines scored the final four points of the game to provide the 14-point margin.

Hobart is back in action at 8 p.m. on Jan. 22, when the Statesmen host Vassar.

William Smith Lacrosse
Scheibel led William Smith against Nazareth on Saturday, netting three goals to record her third career hat trick. She scored twice in the first half, including a free-position goal, and tallied once in the second half.

Pedersen shared game-high honors with four points, including his first hat trick of the season, as the Statesmen defeated Colgate 12-9. He helped Hobart race out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter with a pair of goals. After the Raiders rallied to pull within a single goal, he set up #Mike Suits# to give the Statesmen a 9-7 lead. Pedersen also scored Hobart’s final goal of the day. Through two games, he shares the team lead with six points.
