Llewellyn ties steals mark in Hobart win over Vassar

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior Tim Llewellyn tied the Hobart career steals record while leading the Statesmen to a 76-55 Liberty League win over Vassar College tonight. With a game-high four thefts, he raised his total to 181, matching Hobart Hall of Famer Mike DeMaria ’90.

The Statesmen never trailed the Brewers and were only tied once (2-2), improving to 9-6 overall, 2-2 in the conference. Vassar dropped to 2-12, 0-4.

Hobart shot well (47.6 percent), controlled the boards (38-31), took care of the basketball (just 11 turnovers), and defended well, holding the visitors to just 40 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers. The Statesmen built a 10-point lead by the 10:53 mark of the first half and used a 9-0 run to push their lead into double figures for good 7:15 before the half.

Hobart lead 38-26 at the break and by as many as 21 in the second half.

Mark Bruce led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting for the Statesmen, while Llewellyn, Matt Pebole, and Stefan Thompson each contributed 13 points.

The Brewers got 15 points off the bench from Casey Black, while Caleb McGraw added 13 points.

Vassar's Chris Whitney and John Donnelly and Hobart's Adam Salzmann shared game-high honors with seven rebounds each.

The Statesmen are back in action at 4 p.m. on Jan. 23, when they host Rensselaer (10-4, 2-2). Vassar is at Hamilton tomorrow at the same time.

Kevin Curtin
Hobart Lacrosse
Facing the toughest defense in the nation, Curtin posted his third consecutive hat trick. He completed his collegiate career with a three-goal performance at Bryant on Thursday. The Bulldogs came into the contest allowing just 6.44 goals per game, but the Statesmen netted nine goals, the second highest total against Bryant this season. Curtin capped his career 11th in career goals and career points and 12th in career assists.

William Smith Rowing
DiPalma served as the coxswain for the William Smith varsity eight that finished second in the petite final at the ECAC Championships on Sunday. In their morning heat, the Herons committed a false start, but then turned in the third fastest time of the heats (out of 20 crews in three heats). William Smith covered the course in 6:59.640, then logged a time of 6:57.688 in the petite final, second only to Division I New Hampshire.
