Llewellyn, Thompson grab conference awards

Two Hobart basketball players were rewarded for their efforts on the court by the Liberty League office today. Tim Llewellyn was selected the conference Co-Guard of the Week, while Stefan Thompson shared the Rookie of the Week award.

Llewellyn broke the Hobart career steals record with six thefts over the weekend, raising his total to 183, two more than the previous mark established by Hall of Famer Mike DeMaria '90. He also averaged 13.5 points and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 weekend for the Statesmen. On Friday against Vassar, Llewellyn tied the 20-year-old record with four steals, while also contributing 13 points and six assists in a 76-55 victory. The following afternoon against RPI, he produced 14 points, two steals and an assist in the 66-64 overtime loss. For the week, Llewellyn shot 52.6 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from long range, and made all three of his free throws.

Llewellyn, who also holds Hobart's game (11 vs. Clarkson, Feb. 14, 2009) and season (77 in 2008-09) records for steals, has started all 16 games this season. He is producing 9.2 points, 3.1 steals, and 2.6 assists. Llewellyn leads the conference in steals and ranks ninth in assists, 11th in three-pointers made (1.25), 14th in three-point shooting (.333), and 22nd in scoring. This is the second time this season he has been named Guard of the Week.

Thompson averaged 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steals over the weekend. Against the Brewers, he scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. The following afternoon against the Engineers, Thompson produced another 13 point effort, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists. He made a pair of free throws in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. For the week, Thompson shot 62.5 percent from the floor, including 3-of-6 from long range, and made all three of his free throw attempts.

A starter in all 16 games, Thompson is second on the team in scoring (15.4 ppg) and contributing 3.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals. He ranks third in the conference in scoring and field goal percentage (.587), fourth in free throw shooting (.846), and 11th in assists. Thompson has been named the League Rookie of the Week five times, including three times this month alone. He was also named the Guard of the Week once in December.

Hobart is 9-7 overall, 2-3 in the conference. The Statesmen are back in action at 8 p.m. on Jan. 29, when they visit St. Lawrence (7-9, 3-2).
