10 Herons named to field hockey all-academic team

Ten members of the William Smith College field hockey team were recently named to the 2009 Liberty League All-Academic Team.

“I admire the team’s commitment and dedication, both in the classroom and on the field,” said Julie Kingery, assistant professor of psychology. “These student-athletes work extremely hard and are a fine example of William Smith College’s tradition of excellence. It’s an honor to serve as their Faculty Athletic Fellow and I am very proud of their accomplishments.”

To earn a spot on the team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be at least a sophomore academically. The following Herons were named to the All-Academic squad:

• Senior Katie Baxter, comparative literature major
• Junior Sarah Gall, biology and environmental studies double major*
• Senior Kaitlyn Hamilton, sports in society major*$
• Sophomore Kiersten Hamilton, undeclared
• Senior Juliet Leeming, psychology major*
• Junior Kelsey McLaughlin, architectural studies major*
• Senior Sarah Palmer, architectural studies major*$
• Junior Chelsea Snyder, anthropology and sociology double major*
• Junior Mary Ellen Toscani, media and society major*
• Senior Janelle Walkley, biochemistry major*$

The Heron field hockey team finished 2009 with a 9-8 overall record, its 25th consecutive winning season. William Smith had five players earn all-conference honors, and was the recipient of the league’s Field Hockey Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year.

William Smith Field Hockey
Atwan opened the season with a total of 11 points in two William Smith victories. She netted a pair of goals and assisted on a third, all in the first half, as the Herons defeated Oswego 7-0 on Wednesday. Three days later, Atwan produced her first career hat trick, all in the second half, to rally William Smith from a two-goal halftime deficit to a 4-2 victory. Her 11 points is nearly double her point total from her first two seasons combined and nearly halfway to her point total last year (25).

Hobart Soccer
Hayes scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Statesmen to a 2-1 win at two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Messiah College on Friday. He also scored the game-winner in a 6-1 triumph at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Hayes is tied for the team lead in goals.
