Scranton edges Plattsburgh, advances to NCAA second round

GENEVA, N.Y.—
The University of Scranton women's soccer team scored in the fourth minute to edge Plattsburgh 1-0 in an NCAA Tournament first round game played at Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Royals will move on to face William Smith College in a second round game tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.

Scranton improves its record to 16-4-1. The Cardinals wrap up their season with a 15-4-1 overall mark.

The Royals got on the scoreboard early. First-year Samatha Russo sent a pass into the box. Senior Chelsea Paskman was able to send a shot through a crowd in front of the goal and out of reach of the Plattsburgh keeper. It was Paskman's seventh goal this season.

In the 63rd minute, the Cardinals had a scoring opportunity. Junior Lindsey Keyser fired a shot on goal, but Scranton senior goalie Caitlin Byrne was there to make the save. With 8:59 remaining, Plattsburgh had another chance earning a corner kick, but the Cardinals were called for a foul before they could capitalize.

Byrne made six saves and earned her 12th shutout of the year. Sophomore Alina Greiser played all 90 minutes in goal for Plattsburgh and finished with two saves.

The Cardinals held a 15-9 advantage in shots. Plattsburgh also took five corner kicks, while the Royals recorded just one.
