GENEVA, N.Y.—Ninth-ranked Williams College used a pair of second-half goals to hand 14th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University its first loss of the season, 2-0, in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament Sectional Semifinals at William Smith College's Cozzens Field.
The two sides played a fairly even first half. Although the Ephs (15-3-2) had a lopsided edge in shots (10-1), the match went up and down the field. Williams was able to test ECSU goalie Theresa Pagnozzi, but the senior stopped all five shots on frame. However, the Warriors (16-1-5) struggled to generate chances at the other end of the field against Williams' solid back line.
The Ephs broke through in the 54th minute on a set piece. After an ECSU foul about 10 yards outside of the box, senior Sara Wilds' beautifully struck ball found the upper left corner of the cage for a 1-0 lead. It was her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Williams got some breathing room 24 minutes later when senior Annelise Snyder ran around her defender, dribbled along the end line from the left side and bent a right-footed shot into the net for her third marker of the year.
While the first half numbers didn't tell the full story, the second half numbers did. Williams outshot ECSU 11-3 after the intermission and looked every bit as dominant as the numbers suggest.
Pagnozzi finished the match with eight saves, while Ephs' goalies Julia Schreiber and Laura Wann combined to make two saves.
Williams will square off with William Smith, a 2-1 winner over Oneonta St., in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 21. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for students (with valid ID) and senior citizens, and $2 for children (ages 3-12).
