Herons defeat Williams 1-0, advance to NCAA Semifinals

GENEVA, N.Y.—The ninth ranked William Smith soccer team edged No. 9 Williams 1-0 in an NCAA quarterfinal game played at Cozzens Field this afternoon. Senior BreLynn Nasypany broke through in the 65th minute to secure the win for the Herons.

William Smith improves to 18-2-3, tying the record for wins in a season. With the win, Heron Head Coach Aliceann Wilber improves her career total to 423 wins, which put her in first place on the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer all-time list.

The Herons will head to San Antonio, Texas for an NCAA Tournament Semifinal game on Friday, Dec. 3. William Smith will face top-ranked Messiah at 7:30 p.m. CT.

BreLynn Nasypany
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Renee Jensen sent a pass in the box to Nasypany who was waiting on the left side of the goal. Nasypany placed her shot into the right side of the goal for her 18th tally this season. She tied with three other William Smith players for third on the list for goals in a season. Nasypany now has 53 goals in her William Smith career which puts her in second place on the all-time list. Her 138 career points rank second, just one point away from tying the record for career points.

The Herons had a scoring chance just 3:13 into the contest. A shot by junior Sarah Tarantino banged off the crossbar. The Ephs (15-4-2) best opportunity came in the 61st minute. Right after a Williams corner kick, senior Jackie Russo took a shot that was saved by sophomore Whitney Frary just before it could cross the goal line.

Junior goalie Amanda Davis made four saves in goal for the Herons and earned her eighth shutout of the season. With the win, Davis tied Leah Cornwell '02 for the William Smith record of 17 wins in a season.

Williams sophomore goalie Laura Wann played the opening 45 minute and stopped four shots. Senior Julia Schreiber came in to play the second half and registered two saves. The Ephs and the Herons recorded 11 shots apiece. William Smith took eight corner kicks, while Williams earned three.
