Kush catches conference conferment

William Smith's Kristen Kush was named the Liberty League Women's Basketball Co-Forward of the Week by the conference office today. She led the Herons in scoring last week, averaging 19.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals.

On Tuesday, Kush had 12 points, six boards, and three steals in a 60-51 loss to Hamilton. On Friday, she scored a game-high 27 points and collected six more caroms in an 85-62 win over Clarkson. On Saturday, Kush closed out the week with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds in a 62-54 setback to St. Lawrence. Her scoring effort against the Golden Knights surpassed her previous career-high, while her 18 points against the Saints is her second highest total of the season. For the week, Kush shot 67.6 percent from the floor (23-34) and made all 11 of her free throw attempts.

Kush leads the team and ranks eighth in the conference in scoring (13.1 ppg). Kush also leads the team and ranks sixth in the league in field goal percentage (.452), while collecting 5.4 rpg.

William Smith (7-15, 3-9) will close out the regular season with a pair of road games this weekend. The Herons will face Rensselaer (13-9, 8-3) at 6 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 19, and then visit Vassar (8-13, 4-7) at 2 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 20.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.

Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.
