Herons wrap up season at state championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team completed its season tonight in the Upper New York State Swimming Coaches Association Championships. The Herons placed 10th in the 17 team field, their best finish since 2006.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Lauren Morosky, first-year Casey Sherwin, senior Charlotte Scott, and sophomore Caitlin O'Brien turned in William Smith's best performance of the day. They finished third in the consolation final (11th overall) in a time of 3 minutes, 44.79 seconds.

Scott also finished 16th in the 1,650 free, logging a time of 18:59.71. O'Brien was 23rd in the event in 19:16.96.

Half of the field in the third level final of the 200 breaststroke wore the Herons' colors. First-year Heidi Gordon led the flock, winning the heat and placing 17th overall in 2:36.10. She was followed by first-year Jordan Hawn (2:37.81), first-year Katie Stebbins (2:39.03), and senior Lauren Jack (2:41.25) in third, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

In the third level final of the 200 backstroke, senior Jessica Cook was fourth in 2:18.14, while Sherwin was fourth in the third level final of the 100 free in 0:55.00. Senior Mamme Daley also qualified for a third level final, swimming the 200 butterfly in 2:29.98 to finish eighth.

William Smith Field Hockey
Atwan opened the season with a total of 11 points in two William Smith victories. She netted a pair of goals and assisted on a third, all in the first half, as the Herons defeated Oswego 7-0 on Wednesday. Three days later, Atwan produced her first career hat trick, all in the second half, to rally William Smith from a two-goal halftime deficit to a 4-2 victory. Her 11 points is nearly double her point total from her first two seasons combined and nearly halfway to her point total last year (25).

Hayes scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Statesmen to a 2-1 win at two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Messiah College on Friday. He also scored the game-winner in a 6-1 triumph at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Hayes is tied for the team lead in goals.
