3 Herons garner all-conference laurels

Three William Smith students were among the 16 basketball players named to the 2009-10 All-Liberty League Teams. Juniors Ashlinn Barber and Mollie Danahy earned second team honors, while sophomore Kristen Kush received honorable mention.

Ashlinn Barber
A forward, Barber played in all 24 games this season, starting 20. She leads the conference in rebounding, collecting 9.8 caroms per contest, the highest rebounding average for a Heron since Jennifer Goodell '97 averaged 10.4 in 1996-97. Barber's 236 rebounds rank sixth on school's single season list.

Also an accurate shooter, she is second on the team and ninth in the league in scoring (12.6 ppg) and second on the team and 10th in the conference in field goal percentage (.425). In Liberty League play, she averaged a double-double (13.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg).

Barber posted a team-high eight double-doubles and was named the Liberty League Forward of the Week five times. She hit double figures in scoring 16 times, including a season-high 26 against Clarkson, and grabbed 10 or more rebounds 12 times, including a career-high 17 against conference regular season champion Skidmore.

Last season, Barber earned All-Liberty League honorable mention.

Mollie Danahy
A guard, Danahy started all 24 games. She leads the conference and ranks 21st in the nation in steals (3.75 spg). Danahy also ranks third in the league in assists (3.83 apg) and 12th in scoring (10.9 ppg), free throw shooting (.692), and three-pointers made (21). Her 90 steals this season are eighth on school's single season list. Danahy registered a season-high eight steals at Skidmore, the most in a game by a Liberty League player this season.

Danahy reached double figures in scoring 14 times, including season-high 23 points against East Region No. 1 Ithaca. She was named the Liberty League Guard of the Week after leading Herons to a win at SUNYAC regular season champion Cortland. Danahy dished out a season-high seven assists in back-to-back games against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.

Danahy was the 2007-08 Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year.

Kristen Kush
A starter at forward in 23 of the 24 games she played in, Kush led William Smith and ranked eighth in the conference in scoring (13.1 ppg) and led the team and ranked fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (.455). She was also among the league leaders in rebounding (14th, 5.6 rpg) and steals (15th, 1.46 spg).

Kush produced 20 games of 10 points or more, including a career-high 27 against Clarkson. She collected a season-high nine boards twice, against McMurry and Skidmore. Kush was named the Liberty League Forward of the Week on Feb. 15 after averaging 19.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in three games.

Beset by injuries and illness, William Smith finished the season with an 8-16 overall record. The Herons were 4-10 in the Liberty League.
