CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team fell to St. Lawrence 109-90 today in the Liberty League Championship game at Burkman Gymnasium. The Statesmen slip to 17-10 on the year, while the Saints improve to 16-11 overall. Junior Tim Llewellyn broke his own season record for steals, picking up two this afternoon to increase his season total to 78. His previous mark, set in 2008-09, was 77.

Llewellyn added a team-high 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while sophomore Matt Pebole also netted 19 points, including 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and grabbed four boards. First-year Stefan Thompson added 15 points and a game-high nine assists, first-year Rezin Davis scored 14, and junior Adam Salzmann chipped in six. Both Davis and Salzmann pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Pebole and Thompson both represented Hobart on the Liberty League All-Tournament Team.

Andy Hoercher netted a game-high 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists to pace the Saints. Ralph Temgoua contributed 21 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and Nick Meunier added 18 points and six boards. Hoercher and Temgoua were both named to the all-tournament team, with Temgoua taking home top honors as MVP.

St. Lawrence began the game with a 7-2 run. A three from Llewellyn cut the hosts’ lead to two, 7-5, with 17 minutes to play in the first half. Another Statesmen three, this time from Davis, tied the game at 11-all with 15:08 left. Twenty-three seconds later, Hobart took the lead, 12-11, following a good free throw from Thompson, and at the 13:49 mark, Davis hit another three to put the Statesmen up 15-13.

A jumper from Pebole tied the game again at 17-all with 12:19 to go, but the Saints countered with a 21-8 run over the next seven minutes to take a 36-23 lead with 5:20 on the clock. Hoercher sparked the run with five straight points on a three-pointer and a lay-up. St. Lawrence held a 47-34 lead at halftime.

The Statesmen cut their deficit to 11, 51-40, after a Pebole lay-up less than two minutes into the second half. St. Lawrence again answered with a 14-5 run, capped by two free throws by Hoercher at the 14:40 mark, to seize its largest lead of the game, 65-45.

Hobart would not go away, and continued to chip away at the Saints’ lead. The Statesmen went on a 10-1 run, started by back-to-back threes from Davis and Salzmann, and capped by a lay-up from Davis, cutting their deficit to 10, 70-60, with just over 10 minutes remaining.

St. Lawrence grew its lead to 20 again, 90-70, with just under six minutes to play, but Hobart kept picking away. The Statesmen got within 11 again, 100-89, down the stretch thanks to consecutive three-pointers from Llewellyn, but would run out of time.

Hobart will participate in the ECAC Tournament. The tournament bracket will be released on Mon., March 1.
