#14 Navy tops Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College squash team fell to 14th-ranked Navy 9-0 this morning in the Smith Squash Center. The Statesmen, currently ranked 24th, slip to 4-12 overall, while the Midshipmen improve to 20-6 on the season.

At No. 7, junior Carl Ranieri lost a hard-fought match 3-1 to David Koenig. Ranieri won the first game 13-11, dropped the second 11-2, and battled hard but fell 11-9 in the final two games.

Sophomore Kevin Kent and first-year Daniel Pelaez also played tight matches. At No. 8, John Richey defeated Kent 11-6, 11-9, 11-9, and at No. 2, Allan Lutz topped Pelaez 11-8, 12-10, 11-7.

The Statesmen will be back in action in the Smith Squash Center tomorrow, Feb. 7, when they host 12th-ranked Franklin & Marshall at noon, and sixth-ranked Cornell at 5 p.m.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
