Seven sports teams—four William Smith and three Hobart—will head south for spring break. The Heron tennis and lacrosse squads and the Statesmen golf team will travel to Florida, Hobart tennis will compete in South Carolina, and both rowing teams will be on the water in Georgia. The sailing team will be in action in Maryland and Washington, D.C., while the William Smith soccer team will go even farther south, traveling to Brazil.

The Hobart lacrosse team will also travel south this week, even if it’s just a few hours down to Bucknell. The Statesmen will faceoff against the Bison on Sat., March 13, before returning home to host Binghamton (March 16) and Quinnipiac (March 20).

The Heron soccer squad will travel to Rio de Janeiro and Buzious, Brazil, for a training trip. There, William Smith will face tough competition as it scrimmages Brazilian teams, including one with national team players on the roster. The Herons will also take part in a Brazilian Futebol Confederation clinic, which will focus on technical and tactical skills. The team will have the opportunity to attend a professional game, and squeeze in plenty of sightseeing.

William Smith tennis will play three matches in Orlando, Fla., next week. The Herons (2-1) will take on Dickinson on March 15 before squaring off against the University of Minnesota-Crookston the following day. The squad will wrap its trip with a match vs. St. Michael’s (Vt.) on March 18.

Nearby in West Palm Beach, the Heron lacrosse team will be in action for two games. William Smith (0-1) will meet Brockport on March 15 and Messiah on March 16. The Herons defeated both teams last year in Florida, and will look to do so again after dropping their season opener to Nazareth last week.

The Hobart golf team will be in Orlando as well, for a week of training at the National Golf Center. This is the second year the Statesmen have made the trip to Florida.

The Statesmen tennis team will stay busy with four matches in Hilton Head, S.C. Hobart (2-2) will square off against Messiah (March 15), Wooster (March 16), Denison (March 18), and Scranton (March 19).

Both Hobart and William Smith rowing teams will head for the warmer waters of Augusta, Ga., for a week of training and team building. Both squads will kick off their spring schedules at Ithaca on March 27.

The sailing team will compete in both the John Jackson Team Race at Georgetown and the Navy Spring Women’s Regatta March 13-14. The sailors will spend spring break in Annapolis practicing at Navy, before capping the week by competing in the Truxton Umstead Regatta at Navy, the MAISA Team Race Challenge at Merchant Marine, and the St. Mary’s Women’s Regatta March 20-21.

Abbie DiPalma
William Smith Rowing
DiPalma served as the coxswain for the William Smith varsity eight that finished second in the petite final at the ECAC Championships on Sunday. In their morning heat, the Herons committed a false start, but then turned in the third fastest time of the heats (out of 20 crews in three heats). William Smith covered the course in 6:59.640, then logged a time of 6:57.688 in the petite final, second only to Division I New Hampshire.
Kevin Curtin
Hobart Lacrosse
Facing the toughest defense in the nation, Curtin posted his third consecutive hat trick. He completed his collegiate career with a three-goal performance at Bryant on Thursday. The Bulldogs came into the contest allowing just 6.44 goals per game, but the Statesmen netted nine goals, the second highest total against Bryant this season. Curtin capped his career 11th in career goals and career points and 12th in career assists.
