Stefan Thompson and sophomore
Matt Pebole were both honored by the ECAC after leading the Hobart College basketball team to a 17-11 overall record this winter, the third most wins in the history of the program. Thompson was named the ECAC Upstate Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year, while Pebole earned a spot on the ECAC Upstate All-Star second team.
This is the third Rookie of the Year award for Thompson; he garnered top first-year honors from both the Liberty League and the D3hoops.com East Region. Also an All-Liberty League second team pick, Thompson finished the season fourth in the conference in scoring (15.0 ppg), field goal percentage (.532), and free throw percentage (.842), fifth in assists (3.29 apg), and ninth in steals (1.36 spg).
A point guard, Thompson played in all 28 games for the Statesmen, starting 27. He netted 420 points on the year, shattering the previous standard for points in a season by a Hobart first-year by 119. Thompson registered two double-doubles on the year, posting 10 points and 12 assists in a win over Hamilton and 22 points with 10 helpers vs. St. Lawrence. He recorded double-digits in the scoring column 22 times, including a season-high 29 points in a double-overtime victory over Buffalo State. Thompson was named the Liberty League's Rookie of the Week 10 times and Guard of the Week once.
Pebole, a forward, was a unanimous All-Liberty League first team choice after leading the league in scoring with 18.9 points per game. He also collected D3hoops.com All-East Region first team accolades. Pebole ranked third in the Liberty League in field goal percentage (.537), sixth in free throw percentage (.805), and seventh in rebounding (6.5 rpg). He was tabbed the conference's Forward of the Week nine times.
Pebole netted a season-high 36 points in the double-overtime win vs. the Bengals, and posted a 35-point effort in a victory at St. John Fisher. Against the Cardinals, he connected on a season-high 67 percent of his shots (14-of-21) while pulling down 11 rebounds. Pebole recorded another double-double with 19 points and a season-high 13 boards in a win over Cazenovia. He'll enter his junior season with 745 career points and 286 rebounds.
Pebole and Thompson led the Statesmen to a second place finish in the Liberty League Championship and a berth into the ECAC Upstate Tournament. Hobart's appearance in the Liberty League Tournament was its first since the 2004-05 season. The squad's 17-11 record was just the third winning mark for the program in the past 15 years.
