SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team fell to Skidmore 8-1 this afternoon, in the first match of the spring season. The Herons slip to 2-1 overall, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 4-1.

Sophomore Joanie Hilton picked up a singles victory for William Smith at No. 3. She defeated Laura Attley 6-3 in the first set and held a 3-0 lead in the second, before Attley retired. The win marks Hilton’s fourth of the season, including fall tournament play, and she improves her dual match record to 1-2.

The Herons will be back in action on March 15, when they meet Dickinson in Orlando, Fla.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
