GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team fell to St. Lawrence 16-7 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons slip to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 in the conference, while the Saints improve to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in the Liberty League.

St. Lawrence capitalized on 6-of-10 free-position attempts and outshot William Smith 40-23 on the way to its first win over the Herons since 2005. The Saints also posted a dominant performance in draw controls, winning 18 to the Herons’ seven.

Sophomores Lucy Johnson and Rosie Scheibel led William Smith with two goals apiece. Kim Morse paced St. Lawrence with four goals and an assist, while Mary Jane Sweetland tallied two goals and two helpers, and Nora Langan added three points (1 goal-2 assists). Lexi Wisnowski, Kendall Harty, Margie Bailey, and Alanna Piroli each chipped in two goals for the Saints as well.

St. Lawrence opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the game, after an unassisted tally from Morse. Sophomore Kathryn Gillan evened the score at 1-all less than three minutes later with an unassisted goal of her own.

Sweetland and Scheibel traded goals with 21:23 and 19:53 to play, respectively, before St. Lawrence closed out the half with three straight tallies in the final 5:35, thanks to Wisnowski, Bailey, and Morse. The Saints carried a 5-2 lead into halftime.

Johnson netted the first goal of the second half on a free-position shot just 58 seconds into the period to bring the Herons within two, 5-3. Eleven seconds later, Wisnowski scored her second of the day to push the visitors’ lead back to three.

Senior Molly Fitzgerald and Scheibel answered with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart, cutting William Smith’s deficit to one, 6-5, with 27:58 on the clock, but the Herons would not get closer. St. Lawrence went on to out score William Smith 10-2, including four free-position goals, for the remainder of the contest.

First-year goaltender Jesse Wilson collected 11 saves for the Herons, while Anna Marchand stopped 11 shots for the Saints.

The Herons will be back in action on April 14, when they host eighth-ranked Cortland for a non-league game at 5 p.m.
