GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart rowing team swept Colgate and regained the Seneca Cup in a day of racing on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. Presented to the winning varsity eight in the annual showdown between the Statesmen and Raiders, the Seneca Cup will stay in Geneva for the first time since 2004.
The Cup race was the first event of the day, which was delayed because Colgate’s equipment was late arriving at the Hellstrom Boathouse. The Statesmen needed little more than 700 meters to seize control of the race and cruised to an open water victory. Hobart, powered by

Carmen Cimini, covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 30.66 seconds, nearly 18 seconds ahead of Colgate (6:48.45). The Statesmen third varsity eight also competed in the race, posting a time of 7:16.15.
The second varsity eight race, which also included Hobart’s novice eight, played out in much the same way. The Statesmen took control in the second 500 meters and glided home with an open water win.

Bob Taylor posted a winning time of 6:38.77, more than 16 seconds ahead of the Raiders (6:55.04).
Unlike the first race, the novice eight challenged Colgate’s 2V8 down the stretch, finishing just a couple of seats behind in 6:56.76.
In the varsity four race, the Raiders held the lead through the first half of the race, but Hobart rallied with a strong move down the stretch to seize the victory. Kelly, Trimble, Cobb, Zurakoski, and Roberts crossed the finish line in 7:11.59. Colgate was more than five and a half seconds behind in 7:17.13.
The Statesmen novice four of

Reid Johnson,
Coty Burgess,
Matt Hubbard, and
Eric Ohnmacht completed the sweep. They took the lead shortly after the start and slowly pulled away from the Raiders despite a strong headwind. Hobart posted a time of 7:36.43 to Colgate’s 7:41.72.
“Each boat rowed very well and we’re looking forward to the start of our championship season next week,” Head Coach Mike Alton said.
The Statesmen will compete in the Liberty League Championships on April 24, in Saratoga Springs. Hobart is the four-time defending conference champion.
