GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team fell to third-ranked Hamilton 18-7 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons slip to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while the Continentals remain undefeated at 12-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Liberty League.

Sophomore Rosie Scheibel paced William Smith with three goals, while first-year Kathleen Ragan tallied twice. Ragan also picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Kate Otley and Rachel Friedman led Hamilton with three goals apiece, while Sarah Bray added a goal and two assists. Anne Graveley, Mariah Monks, and Hannah Hoar each chipped in two goals. Meg Pengue shared game-high honors with five ground balls.

The Continentals opened the game with three straight goals and never looked back. Otley sandwiched goals around a free-position tally from Audrey Nebergall to give the visitors a quick lead.

The Herons got on the board with 23 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the first half, as Scheibel finished a feed from sophomore Callie Frelinghuysen. Hamilton responded with three more goals, two from Graveley and one from Otley, to take a 6-1 lead with 17:09 to play.

Less than a minute later, William Smith cut its deficit to four, 6-2, following another Scheibel goal. However, the Continentals continued to push, and went on to outscore the Herons 6-2 in the remainder of the half. Scheibel and Ragan recorded the William Smith goals. Hamilton owned a 12-4 lead at the break.

Bray and sophomore Lucy Johnson traded unassisted tallies to start the second stanza, but Hamilton would score the next four in a row to gain a 17-5 advantage with 16:14 on the clock. Ragan and sophomore Christine Abramo (Orchard Park/Orchard Park, N.Y.) sparked the Heron offense with goals late in the half, but William Smith would not complete the comeback.

First-year Jesse Wilson picked up six saves in goal for William Smith, while Kate Fowler recorded five stops for the Continentals.

Hamilton outshot the Herons 29-12, and held a 26-19 edge in ground balls and a 17-9 advantage in draw controls.

William Smith will be back in action on April 20, when the Herons travel to Ithaca for a non-league contest at 4:30 p.m.
