ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team topped Rochester 14-10 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon at Fauver Stadium. Sophomore Lucy Johnson totaled a game-high five points on four goals and an assist to help the Herons improve to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Yellowjackets slip to 2-10 on the season and 1-4 in the Liberty League.

Sophomore Rosie Scheibel added three goals and a helper for William Smith, while junior Cassie Findlay and sophomore Kathryn Gillan each chipped in two goals and an assist. Senior Molly Fitzgerald recorded a team-high five draws and two points (1g-1a).

Rochester struck first, as Amanda Case and Danielle Mondro tallied 37 seconds apart to take a quick 2-0 lead with just over 24 minutes to play in the half. Less than three minutes later, Findlay halved William Smith’s deficit with her eighth goal of the year.

After over 13 minutes of scoreless action, Mondro, who finished with four goals, connected on a free-position shot to put the Yellowjackets up 3-1. This time, Findlay found Fitzgerald for a score with 6:47 remaining to cut the hosts’ lead to 3-2. Rochester’s Niki Holmes and Scheibel traded goals to end the half, and the Yellowjackets took a slim 4-3 lead into the break.

Johnson and Gillan opened the second half with back-to-back goals 23 seconds apart to give the Herons their first lead of the game, 5-4, with 28:15 left in regulation. Andrea DeFilippo and Case responded with the next two, taking back the lead for Rochester, but a breakaway tally from Scheibel with 24:10 on the clock tied the game again at 6-all.

Holmes tallied to put the Yellowjackets on top again, but William Smith answered with five unanswered goals to grab a 11-7 lead with just over 15 minutes to play. Johnson and first-year Kathleen Ragan each scored twice during the run, and Gillan capped it with her second tally of the day.

Carly Williams found the back of the net to bring the Yellowjackets within three, 11-8, but the Herons scored the next three in a row to take their largest lead of the game, 14-8, with 3:22 remaining. Mondro added two more for Rochester, but would run out of time.

First-year goalie Jesse Wilson stopped 11 shots to earn her seventh win of the year, while Frances Cooley made five saves for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester held a 16-10 advantage in ground balls, and earned a slight 26-25 edge in shots. The ground ball game was even, with both teams picking up 18.

The Herons will be back in action on April 30, when they host 11th-ranked Union for a Liberty League contest at 4 p.m.
