GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team fell to 11th-ranked Union 13-7 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons slip to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while the Dutchwomen improve to 10-5 on the season and 7-0 in the Liberty League.

Brittany Callaghan added a goal, three ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover. First-year
Liz Seidel chipped in three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Union was led by Melissa Hine’s 10-point effort. She scored a goal and assisted on nine, while Kristin Joyce tallied six goals and added a helper. Hine set up five of Joyce’s six goals. Abby Stohler added two goals and two assists for the Dutchwomen, and Chelsea Charette netted three.
Hine netted the first goal for either team 3 minutes, 4 seconds into the game. Potter answered for the Herons just over two minutes later to even the score. Charette tallied to put Union back in front, 2-1, but Potter struck again to tie the game with 23:46 to play in the half.
Twenty-three seconds later, Joyce netted her first goal of the day. Callaghan won the ensuing draw and immediately ran it back for a William Smith score to again even the contest. The Dutchwomen responded with a 4-0 run to end the stanza, including two goals each from Charette and Joyce, and carried a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Stohler opened the second half scoring at the 28:54 mark. Less than two minutes later, sophomore
Kathryn Gillan stopped Union’s scoring run with a free-position goal, cutting the Herons’ deficit to four, 8-4, but the Dutchwomen went on to tally the next four goals in a row to take control of the contest. Joyce scored three goals during the stretch.

Kathleen Ragan connected on a free-position shot with 12:05 on the clock, followed by another goal from Potter, her 14th of the season, and capped by an unassisted tally from sophomore
Callie Frelinghuysen.

Jesse Wilson collected 10 saves in goal, while Cat Ruggiero stopped 11 shots for the Dutchwomen.
Union outshot the Herons 26-20, but William Smith held the advantage in both ground balls (19-16) and draws (12-10).
The Herons will host Liberty League foe Skidmore (7-9, 3-4) for their final contest of the season tomorrow, May 1, at 2 p.m.
