WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—
The Hobart rowing team’s second varsity eight successfully defended its New York State Championship on Whitney Point Lake today. The Statesmen also advanced two boats to tomorrow’s grand finals.

“I think the 2V did a great job today,” Head Coach Mike Alton said. “It was their first tight race of the season and they had a really good sprint to move away at the end.”

With 500 meters remaining in the 2,000-meter race, the second varsity eight was holding on to a slim advantage, but pulled away down the stretch to beat second place Marist by half a boat length. Hobart crossed the finish line in 6 minutes, 18.5 seconds, while the Red Foxes posted a time of 6:20.0. RIT took the bronze medal in 6:22.3, seven tenths of a second in front of Ithaca.

Hobart’s second varsity eight was powered by Harrison Goldberg, Richard Mable, David Grossman, Ryan Scully, Gerry Samson, Dillon Nachbar, Mark Wasmund, Eddie Crockett, and Bob Taylor. Goldberg, Mable, Nachbar, and Taylor were also in the second varsity eight at last year’s championship, while Nachbar and Taylor also won gold medals at states as first-years in the second novice eight and novice eight, respectively.

With more entries, the varsity eight and novice eight required Saturday heats to determine spots in Sunday’s finals. Hobart’s varsity eight won its prelim in 6:16.6, nearly two seconds ahead of Ithaca (6:18.4) and more than 14 seconds better than third place St. Lawrence (6:30.7).

Those three crews will be joined in the grand final by Marist (6:13.8), RIT (6:15.6), and Army (6:21.0).

In the novice eight race, Hobart qualified second behind Army. The Black Knights just eked across the line ahead of the Statesmen, winning by 18 hundreths of a second (6:30.53-6:30.71). RIT was third in 6:37.1.

The other three grand final qualifiers were not available at press time.

The varsity eight grand final is scheduled to begin at 8:32 a.m. tomorrow, while the novice eight grand final is slated for a 9:52 a.m. start.
