WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—
The William Smith rowing team enjoyed a strong morning of racing at the New York State Championships on Whitney Point Lake. The Heron third varsity eight won a silver medal, while two other boats earned berths in tomorrow’s grand finals.

William Smith was seeded third in the third varsity eight race, a finals only battle against Ithaca, St. Lawrence, and Skidmore. The Bombers covered the 2,000-meter course in a winning time of 7:39.08. The Herons crossed the line second in 7:48.04, 82 hundredths of a second in front of the Saints. Last week at the Liberty League Championships, St. Lawrence bested William Smith by 7.1 seconds.

The Heron third varsity eight was powered by Kim Goral, Syd Cheney, Sara Hollingshead, Sarah Gordon, Madison Finley, Cassandra Pearce, Irini Stamatiou, Nora Devine-Carter, and Leila Peraro.

In the varsity eight heats, the top two crews in each of the three races progressed to the grand final. William Smith qualified with a second place finish in its opening heat. Ithaca won the heat in 7:01.58. The Herons crossed the line in 7:13.97, comfortably in front of third place Vassar (7:25.97).

Marist, Rochester, St. Lawrence, and Skidmore also advanced to the grand final.

In the second varsity eight heats, the top three crews in the two heats advanced to the grand final. William Smith posted a time of 7:22.98, good enough for second place. Division I Marsit won the heat in 7:16.28. Skidmore took the third qualifying spot by nearly 11 seconds over fourth-place Hamilton.

Ithaca, Rochester, and St. Lawrence progressed to the grand final from the other heat.

The varsity eight grand final is scheduled to begin at 8:16 a.m. tomorrow, while the second varsity eight grand final is slated for a 9:20 a.m. start.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
