The William Smith College Athletics Department honored two Heron lacrosse players at the annual William Smith Athletics Awards Banquet on April 27. Senior
Molly Fitzgerald was the recipient of the Patricia Price Genovese Lacrosse Award as the team’s most valuable player, while sophomore
Callie Frelinghuysen took home the Shirley Zornow ’48 Lacrosse Coach’s Award.
A four-time All-Liberty League honoree, Fitzgerald started all 63 games over the past four years. She recorded at least one point in all but four of those contests. This spring, Fitzgerald led the team in scoring for the third straight season with 38 goals, 16 assists, and 54 points. She also nothced 26 ground balls, 26 draws, and 11 caused turnovers. In her final collegiate contest, Fitzgerald matched her career-highs for goals (7) and points (9) to lead the Herons to a 24-14 win over Skidmore. Also a three-time IWLCA All-Region selection, she finished the season ranked first in the Liberty League in free-position goals per game (13 FPG, 0.87/g), and seventh in goals, assists, and points.
Fitzgerald closed out her career with 151 goals (54 free-position goals), 57 assists, and 208 points, ranking her first in the William Smith records book in career free-position goals, seventh in both goals and assists, and eighth in points.
A second-team All-Liberty League midfielder, Frelinghuysen started all 15 games this year. She led the team and ranked second in the Liberty League in caused turnovers with 24 (1.60/g). Frelinghuysen also ranked second on the team with 31 ground balls, and registered 12 draws, five goals, and three assists. She tallied the game-winning goal in the Herons’ 22-21 victory at St. John Fisher, and forced a season-high four turnovers in a 14-13 upset of then eighth-ranked Cortland. Frelinghuysen picked up a season-high four ground balls twice, vs. St. John Fisher and Ithaca.
William Smith posted an 8-7 overall record this spring. The Herons finished fifth in the Liberty League with a 4-4 mark.
