WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—
On the second day of the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships, the William Smith rowing team captured a second medal. The Heron varsity eight earned a bronze medal, joining the third varsity eight that won a silver medal yesterday.

"I'm really very proud of the job we did today, particularly the way our boats popped up their racing a level, meeting the level of competition here," Head Coach Sandra Chu said.

The varsity eight of Abbie DiPalma, Claire Brown, Maggie Smith, Alayna Beebe, Alaria Pizzo, Emily Desmery, Tess Wiggins, Tallarie Thurgood, and Jess Steketee qualified for today's grand final with a second place finish in their heat. William Smith returned to the medal stand after missing the podium last year. They covered the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 1.52 seconds, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of fourth place Marist (7:06.36).

Ithaca won the gold in 6:50.38 with St. Lawrence taking the silver in 6:56.31.

The Heron second varsity eight also qualified for the grand final with a second place performance in Saturday's heats. William Smith just missed collecting a third medal, posting a time of 7:24.25.

The Bombers seized another gold in 7:10.54, followed by the Saints (7:13.49) and the Red Foxes (7:15.33).

The Herons will be back on the water on May 9, when they compete in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.
