The Hobart rowing team’s novice eight was named the Liberty League Co-Boat of the Week by the conference office today. The Statesmen won a gold medal at the New York State Collegiate Championships over the weekend.

The Statesmen qualified for the grand final with a second place finish in Saturday’s heats. Hobart logged a preliminary time of 6:30.71, just 18 hundreths of a second behind Army. On Sunday, the Statesmen took revenge, beating the Black Knights by 1.3 seconds for the state championship.

The Hobart novice eight was powered by first-year Sarah Tanzer, Coty Burgess, first-year Reid Johnson, first-year Rob Nanovsky, sophomore John Wasmund, first-year Matt Bianco-Splann, first-year Spencer McCormick, first-year Eric Ohnmacht, and first-year Matt Hubbard.

Hobart has won eight boat of the week awards this season, including at least a share of each of the last three.

The Statesmen will be back on the water on May 9, when they compete in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
