Field hockey team honored for academic success

The William Smith field hockey team earned its seventh consecutive National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Team Award. Additionally, 12 Herons were named to the 2009 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad.

The National Academic Team Award is presented to programs that have a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The National Academic Squad recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2009-10 academic year.

Senior defender Janelle Walkley headlined William Smith’s representatives, making her fourth consecutive appearance on the National Academic Squad. An all-star on the field as well, she earned honorable mention All-Liberty League honors this season.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
