At the Heron Awards Banquet on April 27, William Smith College senior
Charlotte Scott was honored with the Anne Richardson Rowley ’82 Most Valuable Swimming and Diving Award, while sophomore
Caitlin O’Brien was presented with the Kelly Kisner Swimming and Diving Coach’s Award. This is the second time Scott has taken home the Most Valuable Swimming and Diving Award; she also earned the honor as a sophomore.
This winter, Scott led William Smith in many events, including the 1,000-yard freestyle, 500 free, 200 butterfly, and 400 free relay. At the Upper New York State College Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championships, she and O’Brien guided the team to third place in the consolation final of the 400 free relay, for an 11th overall finish. Scott also placed 16th in the 1,650 free at states. She earned victories in the 200 fly and 500 free in dual meets vs. Buffalo State and Alfred, and won the 1,000 free against the Saxons and in a tri-meet vs. Cazenovia and Wells. Scott helped the Herons win the Skidmore Invitational, placing second in the 200 free and swimming a leg for the winning 200 free relay team. At the RPI Invitational, she recorded three top-five finishes—the 500 free (4th), the 200 free (5th), and, along with O’Brien, the 400 free relay (5th).
Scott is a two-time Liberty League and UNYSCSA All-Academic Team honoree.
In addition to being a part of several successful Heron relay teams, O’Brien dramatically improved her times in three individual events this season. After posting a season-low 200-yard freestyle time of 2 minutes, 16.20 seconds as a first-year, she recorded a season-best time of 2:05.83 in the same event this winter. Likewise, O’Brien lowered her time in the 500 free from 6:00.81 in 2008-09 to 5:40.07 this year, and in the 1,000 free, from 12:10.34 to 11:42.18. Against the Wildcats and Express, she won the 200 free, and at the RPI Invitational, she finished fifth in the 1,000 free.
O’Brien also earned a spot on both the Liberty League and UNYSCSA All-Academic Teams.
The William Smith swimming and diving team recorded its best finish at the UNYSCSA Championships since 2006, placing 10th out of 17 teams. The Herons also posted a 6-2 dual meet record, and won the Skidmore Invitational.
