Statesmen send 4 crews to ECAC grand finals

WORCESTER, Mass.—
The Hobart rowing team advanced all four of its crews to the grand finals at the ECAC/National Invitational Rowing Championships today. The Statesmen turned the strong showing into a third place finish in the men's team standings.

Hobart's varsity eight earned its berth in the grand final with a second place finish in its morning heat. The Statesmen needed 6 minutes, 6.006 seconds to cover the 2,000-meter course, less than three seconds behind Michigan (6:03.899).

The final was tightly contested with just 4.284 seconds separating the first place crew (Williams 5:54.538) and the sixth place crew (WPI 5:58.822). Hobart turned in a time of 5:58.558 to take fifth.

The Statesmen varsity eight was powered by Reynaldo Kelly, Andrew Fosbrook, Andrew Cobb, Jack Trimble, Francis Craig, Matt Scanlon, David Roberts, Harold Zurakowski, and Carmen Cimini.

The second varsity eight—Harrison Goldberg, Richard Mable, David Grossman, Ryan Scully, Gerry Samson, Dillon Nachbar, Mark Wasmund, Eddie Crockett, and Bob Taylor
—also took second in its opening heat, logging a time of 6:22.745. In the grand final, the crew missed a spot on the medal podium by less than three seconds, finishing fourth in 6:18.763.

Hobart's third varsity eight of Drew Coogan, Peter Nettl, Evan White, William Gore, Nathaniel Shils, David Ansel, Peter Wasmund, Michael Hess, and Michael Copacino shaved nearly 23 seconds off of its qualifying time (6:46.801) to take fourth place in its grand final in 6:23.926.

The Statesmen novice eight dropped more than 11 seconds from its morning qualifying time (6:34.760) to place fifth in the final in 6:23.253. The novice eight was powered by Sarah Tanzer, Coty Burgess, Reid Johnson, Rob Nanovsky, John Wasmund, Matt Bianco-Splann, Spencer McCormick, Eric Ohnmacht, and Matt Hubbard.

Michigan (69) won the men's point total, while Trinity (68) finished second followed by Hobart (50).

Hobart now must wait to learn if it will receive a berth in the IRA Championships, June 1-3, in Cherry Hill, N.J.
