WORCESTER, Mass.—
The William Smith rowing team competed in the ECAC/National Invitational Rowing Championships today. The Heron third varsity eight progressed to the grand final, while the varsity eight and second varsity eight reached the petite finals.

In the morning heats, the third varsity eight of Kim Goral, Syd Cheney, Sara Hollingshead, Jenna Lohre, Madison Finley, Sarah Gordon, Irini Stamatiou, Cassandra Pearce, amd Leila Peraro took third place in 8 minutes, 0.011 seconds. In the grand final, William Smith improved its time to 7:45.955 and finished sixth. Williams won the event followed by Ithaca and Smith.

The varsity eight—Abbie DiPalma, Claire Brown, Maggie Smith, Alayna Beebe, Jamie Billington, Emily Desmery, Tess Wiggins, Tallarie Thurgood, and Jess Steketee—produced the third fastest time in the heats, 6:59.640. Unfortunately for the Herons, the top two times were in their heat. The top two boats in each varsity eight heat progressed to the grand final.

In the petite final, William Smith was last at one point in the race, but battled back to place second in 6:57.688. Division I Holy Cross won with a time of 6:55.213.

The Heron second varsity eight was just 2.311 seconds from a spot in the grand final, placing third in its heat in 7:16.981. William Smith finished fifth in the petite final in 7:25.188.

The Herons will find out on Tues., May 11, if they will earn a berth in the NCAA Rowing Championships, May 28-29, in Sacramento, Calif.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
