For the sixth time in seven years, the Hobart rowing team has swept the Liberty League’s postseason awards. The Statesmen secured their seventh Crew of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year, while securing their sixth Novice Crew of the Year.

Hobart’s varsity eight captured the 2010 Liberty League Championship by 19 seconds over its nearest competitor. The Statesmen were named the Liberty League Boat of the Week eight times. The crew also captured the Statesmen Trophy (head-to-head race with Ithaca), the Seneca Cup (head-to-head with Colgate), and a silver medal at the New York State Championships.

The boat was powered by junior Reynaldo Kelly, senior Andrew Fosbrook, junior Andrew Cobb, junior Jack Trimble, senior Francis Craig, senior Matt Scanlon, junior David Roberts, sophomore Harold Zurakowski, and senior Carmen Cimini.

Cobb has been a member of three straight Liberty League Crews of the Year, while Craig, Fosbrook, Kelly, Roberts, Scanlon, and Trimble have twice won the award.

The Statesmen novice eight won the Liberty League Championship by 3.7 seconds over the runner-up. They were named the Liberty League Boat of the Week after winning a gold medal at the New York State Championships. The crew also produced impressive results in the HWS Challenge on the Canal (1st of 3), the Head of the Fish (2nd of 27), and the Knecht Cup (3rd in petite final).

The novice eight was powered by first-year Sarah Tanzer, first-year Coty Burgess, first-year Reid Johnson, first-year Rob Nanovsky, sophomore John Wasmund, first-year Matt Bianco-Splann, first-year Spencer McCormick, first-year Eric Ohnmacht, and first-year Matt Hubbard.

Head Coach Mike Alton, assisted by Dan Gilbert ’06 and Ford Weiskittel, led the Statesmen to their fifth consecutive Liberty League Championship, sweeping all four events the team entered. His crews captured nine Liberty League Boat of the Week awards, the Statesmen Trophy, the Seneca Cup, a bronze medal at the Knecht Cup, two golds and a silver at the state championships, and finished third in the men’s points standings at the ECAC Championships. Alton’s staff has won the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year of the Award in each of the past five seasons.
