ROCHESTER, N.Y.—On a wet and windy day, the Hobart rowing team braved 20 mile-per-hour winds, rain, and some intermittent hail to compete at the Head of the Genesse. The Hobart varsity eight finished third overall, while the second varsity eight was close behind in fourth place.
The Head of the Genesee combines a morning head race and a 1,500-meter sprint in the afternoon. The sprint time is tripled and added to morning time. The lowest combined time wins.
The varsity eight of Jessica Dinan, Harald Zurakowski, Coty Burgess, Alex Kent, Nicholas Baca, Michael Cichelli, W. Hunter Holtz, Reid Johnson, and Nick Hindle finished the head race in 15:50, fast enough for second place behind Bucknell. The Statesmen edged out third place Rochester by 5 seconds.
The second varsity eight was seventh overall in the head race and the fastest 2V8+, beating several first varsity crews. The third varsity eight fought through a close race with Bucknell's third varsity, unfortunately, the Statesmen found themselves 5 seconds behind when they crossed the finish line.
In the afternoon races all three Hobart boats were paired up with Bucknell boats. The Hobart 3V beat Bucknell's 4V in impressive fashion earning a combined time of 32:43, good enough for an 11th place finish overall. The Hobart 2V beat Bucknell's 2V, securing the top finishing position for a second varsity crew and a fourth place finish overall.
The varsity eight raced a heated battle with the Bison's top crew, but lost by 4 seconds. The combined time placed them second overall, but a 10 second penalty was assessed to the crew, bumping them down to third place.
"The depth of our program really shone today,” Coach
Paul Bugenhagen said, “To finish third and fourth shows me the JV stepped up today and I'm happy with the progress we're making.”
Hobart returns to the water on Oct. 22-23, when the Statesmen compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles.
