Evan Kirk was named the ECAC Lacrosse League Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office today. He led the Statesmen to a 9-8 season opening victory at Robert Morris on Saturday.
Making his first collegiate start against the NCAA's reigning scoring champion, Kirk was in midseason form. He logged five saves in the first quarter, keeping Hobart within a goal, 3-2, of the Colonials. Kirk turned back three more shots in the second stanza as the Statesmen went into the break down 6-4. He continued to shine in the third frame, recording four saves on five shots, finishing the game with 12 stops.
Hobart trailed RMU 8-4 before mounting its biggest fourth quarter comeback since April 15, 1995, when the Statesmen clipped Penn State 13-12 in overtime, wiping out an 11-7 deficit in the final 10 minutes.
Hobart (1-0) will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26, when the Statesmen visit No. 6 Cornell. Faceoff for the 131st meeting between the two schools is scheduled for noon.
