William Smith College lacrosse Head Coach
Pat Genovese recently introduced Rafe Mattingly '08 as the newest member of her coaching staff. He also works as an assistant director of admissions for Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
“We're very pleased to have someone of Rafe's experience join our coaching staff,” Genovese said. “He was a standout defensive player and is an experienced coach. He's adapting quickly to the women's game and is giving valuable input and direction.”
Mattingly was a three-year letter winner and a captain of the Hobart lacrosse team. A lockdown defenseman, he played in 44 career games and tallied 76 career ground balls. Mattingly earned second team all-conference honors, and was the recipient of the Crook Family Award for leadership, outstanding play, sportsmanship, and overall value to the team.
Mattingly's lacrosse experience also includes time as both a player and a coach in Northern England. He played in the Northern England Premiership League, and worked teaching the basics of lacrosse to primary school students. While in England, Mattingly also coached U12, U16, and senior A teams for the Wilmslow Lacrosse Club. Last season, he served as the assistant varsity boys' lacrosse coach at his alma mater Rush-Henrietta Senior High School in Rochester, N.Y.
As a student at Hobart, Mattingly interned as a research assistant for the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. He studied abroad for a semester at Aukland University in New Zealand, serving as a student teacher at a local secondary school. Mattingly also worked as a camp counselor at the Hobart College Lacrosse Camp.
Mattingly earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
Genovese and her coaching staff return 18 players from last year's team that finished the season with an 8-7 record. The Herons will start the 2011 season on March 5 at Nazareth at 3 p.m.
