Hobart College sophomore forward
Richie Bonney was elected to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men's Basketball First Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He's the fifth Statesman to earn Academic All-District honors this academic year.
To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve, and be at least a sophomore academically. As a first team selection, Bonney will advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
The philosophy major has started all 18 games for the Statesmen this season, averaging 12.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.5 steals. He's shooting 62.4 percent from the floor, .545 from 3-point range, and .758 from the free throw line.
Bonney scored a season-high 23 points at RIT on Jan. 17, notched 20 points at home against Vassar three days later, and then closed out the week with 15 points against Bard. The three-game performance earned him Liberty League Performer of the Week honors.
Since conference play began on Jan. 10, Bonney has been especially potent. In Liberty League games, he ranks first in field goal percentage (.712), second in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and free throw shooting (.867), and 11th in scoring (13.6 ppg).
Hobart (15-3, 8-1) sits atop the Liberty League standings with a two-game lead over St. Lawrence (11-8, 7-4) and Clarkson (13-5, 6-3). The Statesmen visit the Saints at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. The following afternoon Hobart will take on the Golden Knights at 4 p.m.
The Statesmen beat Clarkson 75-61 on Jan. 13 and topped St. Lawrence 73-56 on Jan. 14.
